The 5 Children of John Ross & Annie Black , born 1875-1887
1. Alice Lees Ross 1875. Cleveland Ohio
Alison Lees Ross,15, born Cleveland Ohio is visiting the Robinson family in Edinburgh in the 1891C. In 1901C she, 26, is a domestic housemaid in the Caldwell family in Dunfermline . In 1911 C maybe plain Alice Ross, 36. Maray, Inverness Cannot find a marriage for her on SP . LOOK for a DEATH
"One of the sisters of Margaret Cairns Ross worked as a housekeeper for Fougasse the artist and cartoonist. He and his wife, a Mary Holden Bird, lived in some form of artists commune on the West Coast of Scotland near Morag . I have several copies of his cartoons signed by him and given to my great aunt. I never met her to my knowledge and have no idea when she died". Think this was Alice or ALR
"Alice is ALR the previous housekeeper of Fougasse". Below is a photograph of one of the books given her by Fougasse
.
Maybe later on lived in Ava Street, Kirkcaldy?? Is that the Ava Street house above??. Seen a comment about the 'aunts' house'
2. John Ross 1877, birth on SP, Anstruther Wester. Seemingly in Africa in 1917 . Maybe goes out there on 5/5/1915 on the Saxon from London, correct age, a contractor, but no UK address to confirm it. Then a 1946 sailing from London to S. A , correct age, retired, but last address 46 Church Road, Richmond- doubtful
My paternal grandmothers brother John Ross emigrated to South Africa ,as did his sister Annie, 1887,where he had his own business ( something to do with pots and pans) He eventually left South Africa and went to live in Paris. He never married and I have no idea how long he lived or where he died. I appreciate that this is out with the scope of your investigation but it would be good to know if it is possible to follow up such clues! Cannot find him dying in Scotland 1930-1980 with mother Black, but not sure when mother's maiden name was recorded!!
August 2020: Maggie's sister, Catherine, has details of John's death in Paris, and their father,John Ross Raeburn 1912-2006, attended his funeral, that of his uncle, his mother's brother, there . Hoping Catherine will send me details
John Ross, great uncle of Maggie - where did this photo come from?? taken, maybe, ~1928??

1942. A daughter, Agnes Heughan, died aged 2 hours, cause of death prematurity, in Brakpan - SP d.c available
Some time later Agnes Muir Heughan visited Scotland, and Catherine, another sister & brother, remember her vaguely - dressed in tweeds!'- : she was an organist in Natal - 1950s 1960s ?? I cannot find any shipping records for her, nor any other record( marriage, death etc) for her on Ancestry/FMP
( well that certainly confirms what I’ve been saying I.e. that the cousin referred to in several of his letters and who actually came to U.K. and was seen by both my sisters and my brother! must have been Andrews daughter. Apparently she was an organist in Natal but the only thing my sister can remember was how badly she appeared to be prepared for an English summer, arriving in Tweeds ,mid summer.I don’t suppose South Africa is the easiest place to trace ancestors and I’m almost certain that Agnes had no children, but there again one never knows!) - Maggie 18/8/2020
No death on SP or on IGI 1938-1982, nor for his wife . No obituary on FMP

The above photo of a Kirkcaldy gravestone was found in John Ross Raeburn's possessions ( in a leather file that had belonged to Great aunt Nan- see below, 5.) when he died in 2006: who took the photoand why did they think it was their relation?? It is NOT
Another Andrew Ross was born Kirkcaldy; aged 0, in 1881C, then in 1891C, 1901C & 1911C.
"His wife" died 29/6/1955- cannot find her death on SP , but she married an Andrew Ross( parents James & Euphemia) 3/6/1910 in Kirkcaldy. But the wrong Andrew Ross here: this one died, aged 82, a plumber, in Kirkcaldy on 10/12/1963, parents James & Isabella -SP

and in
The photograph of the headstone was in a leather file belonging to my great aunt Nan, who came back to Kirkcaldy from South Africa . The file, which I no longer have access to, has returned to Tunbridge Wells with Catherine. It’s full of all sorts of things including details of the other brother Johns death and burial in Paris which apparently my father attended ! Obviously we concluded that he must be her brother - Maggie 18/8/2020
5. Annie Bains Ross 1887-1974 - registered as Annie Bessie Bl Ross . Known as great aunt Nan
Annie B R Ross 23, is in 1911C in Kirkcaldy . Emigrated to S A - see above. In 1948, on the Stirling Castle sailing from Southampton to Durban, S Africa, Miss A B B Ross, 60, book keeper, from 51 Ava Street Kirkcaldy- this where her father died in 1917!!. And again 1955, she is on the Braemar, leaving London 1/9/1955 sailing to Durban, S. A. nationality Scottish, , d of b 22/10/1887, British Address Raeburn Naikban, Lower Largo Fife ( Her brother in law Charles Raeburn had died there on 16/4/1955, so she would have been staying with his widow, her elder sister, Margaret Cairns Ross/Raeburn) - FMP. Then returning to the UK in 1957, U K Passport, d of b 22/10/1887, on the Pretoria Castle from Durban to Southampton, intending to live permanently in Scotland, address Naikban, Lower Largo Fife -Ancestry . Annie Bessie Bl Ross, 86, mother Black, died 1974 Kennoway, Fife
Have looked again at the Fougasse- a famous cartoonist , actually Cyril Ken Bird 1879-1950s - books I have. No doubt that they are from 'M.H and KB' and another from C.K.B signed Fougasse I also have two of her water colours. BUT they are addressed to A.L.R and N.R respectively Just wonder if in fact it's Alice Lees Ross,my grandmothers sister NOT my grandfather in which case the N.R could be my grandmothers other sister, known as Nan? One of these worked for Fougasse when he lived in an artists' commune near Morag .

~1890? Margaret, John father, Annie, Alice, John, Annie mother & Andrew
